To The Lighthouse

About novel

To the Lighthouse is a 1927 novel by Virginia Woolf. The novel centres on the Ramsay family and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920.(Wikipedia)

About author

Virginia Woolf

Adeline Virginia Woolf was an English writer, considered one of the most important modernist 20th-century authors and also a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device. Woolf was born into an affluent household in South Kensington, London, the seventh child in a blended family of eight.(Wikipedia)

Thinking Activity

1).How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said? (Key: The 'How' of the narrative technique is to be discussed along with features of Stream of Consciousness technique which helps Woolf to put in effective manner what she experienced in abstractions.)

Ans.

Yes, very appropriately Woolf used complexity in human relationship like the Mr. Ramsay and Mrs. Ramsay. This kind of relationship we can find in everyone's relation in real life and also she said about the struggle in artist's life like in the novel Lily struggle a lot and also we can find similar in our time also that many artist like filmmaker, writers, cartoonist, painters also beaten by public and power or patriarchy. If we read biographically then we can come to know that Virginia Woolf used this technique to prove that women also can write and paint better than men. So, she used stream of consciousness technique 3rd person narrative to move from one to another character's mind. With the help of this technique narrator shows us the inner flow of thoughts walking in the mind of character for instance the(James' thought). So, we can come to know about the inner and outer relationship of characters with each others.

2). Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"? (Key: Take some clues from the painting of Mrs Ramsay drawn by Lily Briscoe and the article by Andre Viola and Glenn Pedersen. Can we read Mrs. R in context of the idea of Ideal Indian Woman - Karyeshu dasi, Karaneshu manthri; Bhojeshu mata, Shayaneshu rambha; Kshamayeshu dharithri, Roopeshu lakshmi; Satkarma yukta, Kuladharma pathni. )

Ans.

Yes, the novel both critique and tribute to Mrs. Ramsay. We can criticize her through the perspective of feminism because she fit more in patriarchal mindset, she obey her husband and also give respect to men rather women. She do note sees Lily as respected as she sees the men around her and also this novel is tribute through Lily's paintings in which Mrs. Ramsay is center of the house and well house manager.

Yes, we read Mrs. Ramsay as an Ideal woman through above given slok. We will try to understand her characteristic through the slok.

Karyeshu Dasi - means not exactly one who works like maid. But what is the main quality we look in maid is loyality. So, we can say that Mrs. Ramsay is very loyal to her household and to her family who obey her husband and nurture her children very loyally.

Karaneshu Mantri: Mrs. Ramsay also a very good adviser. She gives very good advise to her husband and her children for what is good or bad.

Bhojyeshu Mata: She is very good at cooking and feeding food to her family even her husband get anger for the test of food but she keep calm and when we see the dinner party in which she arranged many delicious foods item and show her unconditional love for feeding food.

Shayaneshu Rambha: Rambha means Apsara who is very beautiful and give comfort to man. We can see this kind of quality in Mrs. Ramsay also, she is very beautiful and comfort giver to her husband and we can see through the numbers of her children that how she fulfilled sexual desire of her husband.

Roopeshu Laxmi: Mrs. Ramsay also Goddess of dedication and Humility. Her dedication towards her family and household make her gorgeous.

Kshmayeshu Dharithri: Mrs. Ramsay is like mother earth who forgive every misbehavior of her husband. So, here we can find the quality boundless compassion. So, here we can say that Mrs. Ramsay is a Kula Dharma Patni(Perfect house wife) she possess the qualities like loyalty, intelligence, unconditional love, cheers for good causes, dedication, humility and boundless compassion.

3) Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)? (Key: Take help from the presentation on Symbolism to connect Mrs. Caroline Ramsay with Lighthouse. Secondly, the narrator / author cannot fully disappear from the novel and thus the stoicism of Lily to paint and thus prove that she can paint, is symbolically presented in stoicism of Lighthouse. Read 'lighthouse' symbol from presentation slide with this insight to connect lighthouse with the narrator. Give your concluding remarks in the comment below in this blog )

Ans.

As it is suggested in the presentation, we can interpret the symbol of lighthouse with Mrs.Ramsay who is the center in the novel and direction giver to the family like lighthouse gives the way to the bushed people,About the narrator, with biographically context, we can say that Virginia's character is more presented in Lily's character and her dilemma is Virginia Woolf's own mental dilemma. Furthermore, we can say that Virginia portrayed her character in the Lily's character because Woolf also was a stoic personality in her time as an artist so she is connected with the Lily throughout the novel.

4). In the article by Joseph Blotner, two myths are patterned together. Name the myths? How they are zeroed down to the symbols of 'Window' and 'Lighthouse'? How does the male phallic symbol represent feminine Mrs. Ramsay? (Key: The strokes of light-beams. . . )

Ans.

In the present novel Woolf used two myths one is Pagan myth in which Woolf connected Mrs. Ramsay with Rhea who had similar numbers of children like Mrs. Ramsay and also a well nurtured woman and with Demeter an important characteristic of Mrs. Ramsay in her Demeter aspect is her complete femininity as Demeter was worshiped more by men than women like Ramsay who respected more men than women and also Demeter was known as maker of earth fruitful while Mrs. Ramsay also a maker of Fruitful family. Another myth is the myth of Oedipus. We can see the aspect of the myth between Mrs. Ramsay and James, James hate his father because he do not want that his mother love his father.

5).What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman'? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel?

Ans.

The German term "Kunstlerroman" means development or a struggle of an artist as in 'To the Light house" Lily's and Carmichael characters the novel itself is a struggle of an artist. It also deals with arrogant rejection of the commonplace life, and biographically we can say that Virginia Woolf also becoming an artist in her life and also faced lots of struggle in life because of patriarchal thinking about women of her time,in this novel the character of Lily makes it 'Kunstlerroman' novel.

6)."... the wages of obedience is death, and the daughter that reproduces mothering to perfection, including child-bearing, already has on her cheeks the pallor of death. One reminded here of various texts by Lucy Irigaray, in which she attacks mothers for being, however unwillingly, accomplices in the patriarchal system of oppression." (Viola). In light of this remark, explain briefly Lily's dilemma in 'To The Lighthouse'.

Ans.

Throughout the novel, Lily strongly oppose to patriarchal power, she believe in feminism and freedom. She wants to be free without any kind of male company but at the end of the novel we come to know that she also wants be a like Mrs. Ramsay a married life have family and children to be enjoy thelife. Ramsay. So, Lily was very confuse to follow pure femininity or man company and also somewhere he attracted towards Mr. Bank.

7).You have compared the 'beginning' and the 'ending' of the novel and the film adaptation of the novel directed by Colin Gregg (you can see it again in the embedded video below this). Do you think that the novel is more poignant than the movie? If yes, do you ascribe the fact that the power of words is much greater than that of the screen / visuals?

Ans.

When we read the beginning of the novel it has effective start like we enter in the mind of characters one by one and in the film it has differently begun with the introduction of the characters. At the end, the confusion of Briscoe has very well described by the narration and in the film, it has described by the visual effects of light and sound. Both are effective but we can say that novel has long narration of Lily's dilemma and her vision.

8).How do you interpret the last line of the novel (It was done; it was finished.Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision.) with reference to the ending of the film (After the final stroke on the canvass with finishing touch, Lily walks inside the house. As she goes ante-chamber, the light and dark shade makes his face play hide-and-seek. She climbs stairs, puts her brush aside, walks through the dark and light to enter her room. Gently closes the door - speaks: "Closed doors, open windows" - lies on the bed and with some sort of satisfaction utters: "Dearest Briscoe, you are a fool".)

Ans.

These last lines suggested that Briscoe realized that Mrs. Ramsay was not totally wrong. Close the doors but open the windows. Though, she thought marriage is not necessary, marriage and family is important also. In the film before making final stroke she sees Mrs. Ramsay and jams wandering happily in garden. She also might want live that life. So, that can be her vision going inside the room, leaving brush somewhere, and on bed saying Briscoe, you are a fool suggests that Mrs. Ramsay was right. Now she has her vision.

9) What does the catalogue named as 'Army and Navy' signify? What does cutting of 'Refrigerator' signify?

Ans.

Army and navy catalog signifies time of war. Refrigerator symbolizes preservation of culture. In the novel Mrs. Ramsay is traditional housewife, guiding James while cutting refrigerator suggests that she wants other to preserve culture, for instance she suggest Lily to marry.

10).Why did Virginia give such prominence to the tale of the “Fisherman’s Wife”? In particular, why did she weave such a misogynist tale into the fabric of a book which so eloquently challenges received patriarchal notions about the roles and capabilities of women?

Ans.

The tale of "Fisherman's wife is connected with the character of Mrs. Ramsay as well as Mr. Ramsay, because Woolf is subverting the misogyny of fairy tale for example, the male character are behaving like fisherman's wife, they have wishes which are not fulfilled in a way they wants and that unsatisfied desire leads them towards failure. Mrs. Ramsay is more successful in her work than Mr. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe is better in her profession than Charles Tansley. Fairy tale shows the dangers of male willfulness and desire.

11).How is India represented in 'To The Lighthouse'?

Ans.

6th time India mentioned in the present novel, first is for patriarchal rule means male dominant country in which women's role like Mrs. Ramsay as Pure Bharatiya naari. Second is the wealth of India like Gold, Pearl etc. This kind of mentioning of India we can see in many English literature like in John Donne's poetry in which he mentioned spicy of India. Dr. Faustus in which Faustus's desire for Indian Gold and Pearls. And in this novel the poet Carmichael wish and desire to India for peace.

Thinking activity on Modernist Literature & War Poems

Thinking activity by Dilip Barad Sir

Thinking activity :-Identify the modernist, symbols, imagery and metaphors from the poems.

The Embankment   (7 lines poem)
                       By T.E Hulme

Hulme's 'The EmbankmentT. E.Hulme (1883-1917) was an influential poet and thinker in the first few years of the twentieth century. ... But now, down on his luck and most probably sleeping rough on the streets, he realises that warmth is what really matters and is what poets should be singing about.

About poem

The Embankment

In this poem symbols like ''star-eaten blanket '' shows that usually stars represent beauty in the darker sky and also we can say that star represents the hope in the situation of darkness. Here ''Flash of Gold Heels '' represents the beautiful woman and '' hard pavement '' represents the hard and rough side of the society. But the darker side of this phrase ''Flash of Gold Heels with Hard pavement '' is though she is beautiful but she is prostitute as well.

2) Darkness (4 lines)
              By Joseph Campbell

Joseph John Campbell was an American Professor of Literature at Sarah Lawrence College who worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. His work covers many aspects of the human experience.

Poem :- Darkness

I stop to watch a star shine

in the boghole -

A star no longer, but a silver

ribbon of light.

I look at it and pass on.

In this poem ''star '' shows the beauty of stars in the dark sky and without stars sky is all dark and ''darkness '' itself is the symbol of brightness and hope. So here we can say that shine of a star and a silver ribbon represent the positive side of this age.

3) Image (3 lines)
             By Edward Storer

Edward Storer

Edward A. Storer was born in Alnwick on 25 July 1880 to Frances Anne Egan and James John Robson Storer, he died in Weybridge (London) on 11 February 1944. In 1907 he was on the Roll of the Law Society of England and Wales (London) qualified as a solicitor.

The dictionary meaning of ''forsaken '' is ''to give up '' so here ''forsaken lovers '' represents the fall .Here is a phrase ''forsaken lovers burning '' so here we can say that they are burning in lots as T. S Eliot discussed this in the third part. ''the fire sermon '' in this part he discussed about the people who are burning lots in spiritual degradation.

Modernism

Literary modernism, or modernist literature, has its origins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mainly in Europe and North America, and is characterized by a very self-conscious break with traditional ways of writing, in both poetry and prose fiction.

The characteristic of Modernism

  • Marked by strong and internation break with tradition. This break includes a strong reaction against established religious, political and social views.

  • Belief that the world is created in the act of perceiving it ;that is the world is what we say it is.

  • There is no such thing as absolute truth. All things are relative.

  • No connection with history or institutions. Their existence is that alienation, loss, and despair.

  • Championship of the individual and celebration of inner strength.

  • Life is unordered.

  • Concerned with the subconscious.

Thinking activity on The Waste land

The task given by Dilip Barad Sir,

-Thinking activity

                         The Waste Land(poem)

About The Waste Land

The Waste Land is a poem by T. S. Eliot, widely regarded as one of the most important poems of the 20th century and a central work of modernist poetry.

This epic poem divided into different five parts like as,
(1)The Burial of the Dead (76lines)
(2)A Game of Chess (96 lines)
(3) The Fire Sermon (139 lines)
(4) Death by Water (10lines)
(5)What the Thunder Said (113lines)

The Waste Land” Parts I-II Analysis. In the first two parts of his poem “The Waste Land,” T.S. Eliot uses personification to contrast life and death and the past and present, and alludes to classic Western works to highlight the immense differences between the old and modern world.

Q-1  What are views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'?Do you think that  Eliot is regressive as compared to Nietzche's views? Or has Eliot received universality of the thought by recalling mythohistorical answer to the contemporary malaise ?

Answer

According to me, the views of Eliot can be considered as more realistic than Nietzsche, Nietzsche finds the solution of present in future while Eliot is finding the solution of present and future in past because past is like a mirror as well as lesson for people that is why Eliot make his views universally and realistic.

 Answer :-

Yes, it is truth that giving free vent to the repressed primitive instinct' can lead us to happy and satisfied life, but individually, things and happiness which is satisfying us can harm others and which give pleasure to others can harm us. But as per Eliot views if all follow such culture, tradition and belief in such lifestyle and moralities, a network of understanding can be created human live peacefully.

3) Write about allusion to the Indian thought in "The waste land"(where, how and why are the Indian thought referred?)

The allusion to the Indian thought Eliot mentioned in the last part of the poem:

"Ganga was sunken, and the limps leaves
waited for rain, while the black clouds
gathered far distant, over Himvant
The jungle crouched, humped in silence."\

Then Eliot gives three 'Da'

1)Datta- to give not only charity but giving oneself for some noble cause.

2) Dayadhvam- Sympathies yourself with the sorrows and suffering of others, come out of your isolation and love into others.

3)Damyata- Self control, control over one's passion and desire.

As per my view, every religion have good thoughts and ideas but Upnishadas idea of peace does not mean just a state of No-war neither it is limited just to men or countries and communities. But it embraces the whole nature and the whole creation.

LetsL see the original Shantih mantra and its translation so we can get idea about why Eliot found it suitable.

So, here we can say that Indian thoughts about peace in every universal things. We should not like vulture, keep others away from having what we actually don't need but be a giver, sympathies with other. Gandhiji also said: ''There is enough on this earth for everybody's need, but not sufficient for one's greed. We should not belivbb in materials and contemporary things that one day will destroy. In this way I think T.S Eliot might found Upnishada's thoughts of ,"Datta", "Damyata", "Dayadhvam", and "Shantih" suitable for universal peace.

The Scarlet letter and Kya Kehna, movie review

The review of The Scarlet letter and movie Kya Kehna

About this movie

The Scarlet Letter: A Romance is a work of historical fiction by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1850

The Scarlet Letter is a 1995 American romantic drama film. It is a film adaptation of the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel of the same name. It was directed by Roland Joffé and stars Demi Moore, Gary Oldman, and Robert Duvall. This version was "freely adapted" from Hawthorne and deviated from the original story.

About this movie

A young girl gets pregnant but the father of the child dumps her. With her family against her, her only hope is her best friend who helps her fight against all odds and win back her family's support.

1.What are the names of the protagonists characters in both the movie ?

Ans:- 1. Kya Kehna
               Protagonist character is Priya
          2. The  Scarlet letter
               Protagonist character is Hesrer

2.Write their story in brief

The Scarlet letter

The story begins in seventeenth-century Boston, then a Puritan settlement. A young woman, Hester Prynne, is led from the town prison with her infant daughter, Pearl, in her arms and the scarlet letter “A” on her breast. A man in the crowd tells an elderly onlooker that Hester is being punished for adultery.

Kya Kehna

The story is about Priya Bakshi (Preity Zinta), the daughter of Gulshan (Anupam Kher) and Rohini Bakshi (Farida Jalal). Priya has her parents, brothers and best friend, Ajay (Chandrachur Singh) who all love and support her. She enters her first year in college and catches the eye of Rahul (Saif Ali Khan) who quickly becomes attracted to her. She succumbs to his charm but her brothers and parents are not sure about Rahul. His womanizing nature worries them and they tell her to stay away from him. However, Priya is unable to leave Rahul. She convinces her parents to meet him but when they talk about marriage he backs off and he leaves Priya. Priya is devastated but moves on with her life. In one sweep she learns that she is pregnant with Rahul's child. Her parents go to Rahul to talk about marriage but to their shock he refuses to marry her. Priya is faced with a decision, and she chooses to keep the child. Her decision prompts her father to chuck her out the house. Alone and neglected Priya is devastated, but her parents and brothers find it hard to live without her and they bring her home. She now has to face society and try to overcome the disdain of her neighbors, among others. Society virtually ostracizes her and her family. She eventually gains the support of those who had earlier disrespected her. At the same time she manages to change Rahul's views as well and he decides to marry her. However, Priya has already given her heart to Ajay and they get married.
3. What is  the role played by society in Hester's life?

In this movie Hester's  life like barran. She hasn't her identity without husband and she fight alone then she done adultery at that that time society ask questions which answer Hester could not able to give punished her. Even society believe one person unknowingly death reason Hester adultery sin and given punishment of hunging then Dimmesdale conferences he is Pear's father. After society release he. And again she lived alone.

4.What is the role played by society in Priya's life?

Priya is student and she loves Rahul and shebecame pregnant. Here conflict between middleclass society and high class society. Rahulbelong to high class family and Priya be belong middle class family so Rahul's family speciallyhis mother didn't accept Priya. After shebecome pregnant without marriage societyhated her, even her parents are not sporting herthen as loving relation with family then herfamily given sport her. In the college functionplayed drama on Priya's life and everyonelaughed her. At that time Priya gives speech andeveryone clapping her courage but if we analysesociety so we can know it is not easy as likePriya convinced society.

5.Compare and contrast the male characters,  Roger Chillingroth,  Arther Dimsedale,  Rahul and Ajay.

In the movie Scarlet letter,  Roger Chillingworth,  Arthur Dimmsedele,  both male character are completely different from each other, Roger is Hester's husband and Arthur Dimmesdale is Hester's lover.  In movie Kya Kehna,  Rahul couldn't able to accept Priya in bublically.  Ajay character is like honest and kind person who deeply loved Priya,  even she was pregnant of Rahul's child although Ajay ready to accept her.

6. Compare and contrast The Scaffold scene in The Scarlet letter and a year -end performance in Kya Kehna in which a group of students performance a play on Priya and her pregnancy.

In Kya Kehna end of movie in the stage Priya tried to justify herself that she had not done wrong decide to giving birth of child.

7.What are the reasons that Arthur Dimmesdaleand Rahul do not come forward to accept theirfatherhood? How do you they differ and whatare the similarities?

Arthur Dimmesdale is priest that's why he maybe afraid to the society,  how society react after society knowing his realty. Rahul belongs to high class family that's why maybe he also afraid of society.

8.What is the role played by Chillingworth in Hester's life? Why do you think he wanted totake revenge on Hester and Dimmesdale?Chillingworth is husband of Hester.

Chillingworth played enemy role in Hester's life. And he wanted to take revenge on Hester and Dimmesdale.

9.What is the role played by Rahul's mother in Priya's life? Why do you think she wants to take revenge on Priya?

Rahul's mother didn't accept Priya as daughter in law, because they belongs to high class family.

10. Write a note on class difference in Kya Kehna.

In this movie two class conflict middle class family and high class family. Here we can see that Priya belongs to middle class family and Rahul belongs to high class family. So that Rahul's mother don't accept Priya as a daughter in law.

11. Why do you think the director has lifted the character of Ajay to the ideal state? Is it possible in real life? What are the reasons of your YES or NO?

According to my point of view it maybe possible. It's depends on human understanding.

12.How do you see Hester and Priya as
individuals?

The character of Priya,  she stronger than Hester because at the end of movie,  Priya herself tried to convince society she had not done wrong.

13. Write a critical note on the end of the movie and the novel. Why do you think the novelist has not given happy ending?

In the movie Kya Kehna,  we can see that the end of the movie Priya get marry with Ajay and he also accept her child. So the end of this movie we can see happy ending.

English Language Teaching First 5 Essay

(1) What is language for you?

Answer :-

English may not be the most spokenlanguage in the world, but it is the official language of 53 countries and spoken by around 400 million people across the globe. Being able to speak English is not just about being able to communicate with native English speakers, it is the most common second language in the world.

Why Learning English is so Important

English is the language of science, of aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. Knowing English increases your chances of getting a good job in a multinational company within your home country or for finding work abroad. It’s also the language of international communication, the media and the internet, so learning English is important for socialising and entertainment as well as work!

English is the Language of International Communication

English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language of 53 countries and spoken by around 400 million people across the globe. Being able to speak English is not just about being able to communicate with native English speakers, it is the most common second language in the world. If you want to speak to someone from another country then the chances are that you will both be speaking English to do this

2.)  What kind of challenges you are facing and have faced while learning this language?

Different students can have different difficulties and problems in learning English. They can make different mistakes in English pronunciation, grammar, orthography and vocabulary usage.

First of all... I'm facing the major challenge when learning  English language like.,

Pronunciation

Spelling mistakes

If we come to solution it will be easy to discuss it in the same sequence.

Listening an English channel will improve pronunciation skills. Some English cartoons are very helpful due to pace of speaking in them. Different characters speak very slow and you can understand every word they speak and it makes easy for you to correct your pronunciation.

3.)  Write in brief your understanding about any one essay.

Socio-cultural Dimensions of English as a Second Language by Rekha Aslam

  • The creative exploitation of linguistic resources reflects the values of different socio-cultural traits.
  • The Indian reality is manifested at many levels of language organization from borrowing, lone creatings to idiom, metaphor, symbolism etc. brought to the English language

In India there are so many languages spoken by the people, so we can say that India is multi language country. Every state has its own culture and society and these things can not be translated in English. When language is contract or interest at that time they suffer a lot. Indian people have neglected the Gujarati language and we want to learn English as a second language. If someone does not know the difference between English and mother tongue, He or she can not learn language. If we know any language then we can learn easily other language. We do not love English that is why we can not learn English language. We have to put interest in learning any language.

4.)  According to you which Position English Language should be given?

English is the language of the modern world. All people around the world know the English language importance in our life, because we need it in our work and sometimes when we meet other people from other cultures, maybe they are not from Britain or America but we almost think they are talking English. And we need it for traviling to other countries. That does not mean our language is not important. I believe all people love their languages, but the first language now in the world is English.

5)  How you see your future with English Language?

English, as any other language, is a living and dynamic system, and it transforms according to the way its speakers use it. For this reason, today'sEnglish will be very different in about a century.
